The Maine Maritime Academy schooner Bowdoin set sail this week for a training cruise that will carry it to the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. With 12 students enrolled in the school’s spring training cruise course, the historic schooner will head for St John’s Newfoundland, under the command of Capt. John Worth. From there the Bowdoin will embark on a round of visits to a dozen ports in Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in the province’s Celebrating Bartlett 2009 festivities. The event commemorates the life of Capt. Bob Bartlett, who joined Admiral Peary on his 1909 trek to the North Pole. After leaving St. John’s, The Bowdoin’s first port visit is scheduled for july 11–13 at the outport of Brigus, Bartlett’s home.
